Calculation Details & Assumptions

View employer match formula, compounding, contribution caps and limitations

Retirement projection: the calculator models 12 contributions at the end of each month in each full simulated year. The annual salary adjusts once at the beginning of each subsequent year. The monthly return factor is (annual investment return − annual fee assumption) ÷ 12.

Next Month Balance = Previous Balance × (1 + Monthly Net Return) + Employee Contribution + Employer Match

Employer matching: a simple annualized formula is used: min(employee deferral, eligible salary × match-up-to salary percentage) × match rate. Contributions are distributed equally over 12 modeled months. Actual payroll-by-paycheck matches, vesting, eligibility and true-ups may differ.

2026 limit mode: regular elective deferrals are capped at $24,500. If the plan permits catch-ups, an additional $8,000 is modeled for ages 50–59 or 64+, and $11,250 for ages 60–63. Employee contributions cannot exceed annual salary. Employer matching also observes the $72,000 general annual-additions limit (excluding modeled catch-ups), the 100%-of-compensation rule, and the $360,000 compensation cap. These 2026 amounts are held constant in future simulated years as a planning assumption; future legal limits will change.

Uncapped mode: ignores IRS dollar limits for hypothetical comparison but still does not model employee contributions above actual annual salary. It is not a statement of legally permitted contributions.

Inflation: today's-dollar value = projected nominal balance ÷ (1 + annual assumed inflation)years. Investment growth includes effects of return assumptions and modeled fees; negative values are possible. Results are before income taxes and withdrawals.

Important limitations: the model assumes 12 complete contribution months even for the first simulated year, not just months remaining in 2026. It is not a calendar-year compliance checker. IRS limits may be shared across plans; it does not model other plan deferrals, tiered matching, profit sharing, vesting, partial employment, plan-specific restrictions, fluctuating returns, actual fee deduction schedules, RMDs, or Roth/traditional tax differences. Review your plan documents and IRS guidance for actual limits.
